Bali Hai Restaurant completes renovation. The restaurant opened in 1953 as Christian’s Hut on the newly constructed Shelter Island, and was later renamed the Bali Hai by restaurateur Tom Ham after the song popularized by the musical South Pacific. The Bali Hai is famous for two tiki icons: Mr. Bali Hai and “The Goof,” on the roof. Family owned and operated for over five decades, Ham’s vision continues through his daughter Susie Baumann and her husband Larry and their two sons. This harbor landmark has been renovated by the Baumanns, through architect Graham Downes. Bali Hai offers wonderful California-Asian cooking and a spectacular place to celebrate special occasions.
