AS THE TRAILER TURNS AND TURNS AND TURNS
It was a long weekend. The kind that starts on Wednesday and ends on Monday. There were several of us, all arriving at the camp area at different times that first day. We had an A-class, B-class, several tents and a trailer in the group. And by the end of the day, everyone but the trailer had arrived.
The campfires were being lit as the trailer pulled in. The site we had chosen for him had a level concrete pad with lots of room on all sides. We figured that it would be an easy site in which to back the trailer.
Our calculations, however, did not include the presence of two cars and a truck that had parked across the way after our arrival. The owners were friendly folk, and willing to move them, but our trailer pilot declined, and went confidently into the task of backing in.
No one paid much attention as the process began. We thought it would only take a minute of time and couple of turns. He pulled past the site, backed up and, perhaps because of the truck and cars parked nearby, turned the wheel several feet too soon. The trailer obediently backed into the space with the right wheels off the pad and in the dirt.
Heads turned as a soft expletive drifted out the drivers side window.
The truck lurched forward and to the right as he tried again to swing the trailer in. The truck and cars were too close.
More heads turned to see what the others were looking at.
He straightened out again, and gave it another try, angling it in. This time, the wheels did end up on the pad, but the trailer was at a severe angle, and too far in...
