& Tales THE OTHER SIDE OF RENO, PART OF THE VANISHING OLD WEST To most travelers, Reno, Nevada is the place to come to for special events such as Hot August Nights, The Reno Championship Air Races, The Reno Balloon Races, and The Reno Rodeo. Some come to test their luck at one of the many hotel/casinos in the area. Others find it a convenient stopover when driving along I-80 or US 395. Interestingly enough, many folks are totally unaware of the somewhat hidden attractions that are within a mere ten miles of the downtown core! Nevada is fortunate to have an incredibly vast amount of its territory as public open space, most of it being managed by the federal government. The mountains to the east and southeast of Reno are the Virginia and Flowery Ranges. These areas hold numerous treasures for the adventurous souls who enjoy getting off the beaten track. The only requirement to access these areas would be a higher clearance vehicle (such as a SUV, 4x4 truck or ATV)...
