THE RINGTAIL Snatching a bat out of midair is quite an acrobatic feat, but it was no special trick for the ringtail. Tough, strong and wiry, she was a daredevil rock climber, searching the rimrock each night for prey. On a trip up a cliff, the little ringtail might bounce off one vertical rock face, grab an invisible clawhold on another, then enter a crack going straight up – and bracing her hind feet on one wall and her front feet on the other, zip to the top. No, it was an easy thing for her to catch the little myotis bat. It was nearly dark when the ringtail finished her meal and sat grooming confidently in the deepening dusk by the little pool. The bat had been delicious, but it had been small and she was still hungry. She rose and moved like a swift shadow in the darkness – the half moon wouldn’t rise for quite awhile yet. She scrambled gracefully up a steep rock face to explore a slight noise. There she discovered and ate a rock wren which had thought itself safe in a deep crevice in the rock. Having gone headfirst into the narrow crack, the ringtail had little room to turn around, but this was no problem. She did a handstand, walking her hind feet up the wall and down around behind...
