Art Treasures of the Sacramento Mountains

Under a cerulean sky it is the perfect morning to join other art aficionados on the Alto Artists’ Studio Tour. Alto, New Mexico, is a small mountain town of approximately 2,000 people - just five miles northwest of Ruidoso. Each year the Alto Artists create an auto tour throughout Alto and the Fort Stanton Mesa.

To visit these artists, get your “treasure” map from Ruidoso Visitor’s Center or any of the sponsoring businesses. The tour route, itself, is clearly marked with signs and large colorful banners.

The route takes you through some of the prettiest countryside imaginable. Think tall Lodgepole pines on steep terrain leading down to a large flat-topped mesa. Artist’s studios are tucked under towering pines, perched on the steep hillocks with spectacular mountain views, or in valleys beside meandering creeks. Sharp-eyed visitors might spot small herds of mule deer.
